Medical Billing System

By looking at the person in charge of the medical billing system you’d know he uses software and looks through pre-filled documents. This can make some people think that handling the medical billing system of a hospital or private practitioner is actually easy. After all, all you have to do is to encode some data for the software to process them. This is absolutely wrong.

The medical billing system involves two main functions. There are those who are in charge of actual medical billing while others are in charge of assigning medical codes. There is a difference between the two functions but one cannot exist without the other. They are related functions.

The medical billing system begins when coders look at a patient’s record and translates the services and procedures into codes that can be understood by insurance people. Once the codes are in place, part two of the medical billing system begins. The medical billing agent interprets the codes to be able to determine the appropriate payment due to a health care practitioner or institution.

Coding

Some time ago, paying doctor’s fees was quite a simple process. There was no medical billing system. You simply had to pay your doctor right after your visit or hospital stay. This is no longer a very frequent scenario these days. Many patients actually have insurance. Even without private insurance, the government does provide insurance coverage to many people. This is why the medical billing system is now necessary. Physicians and health care facilities cannot be paid without the system.

After a patient has been diagnosed, checked or treated, his records are forwarded to the medical billing system coder. The coder will then pick the right codes composed of letters and numbers. The codes picked depends on which ones match factors like check-up time, diagnosis, kind of treatment and others based on guideline standards.

A coder therefore needs to have some basic medical knowledge. That’s not the hardest part of it though. Coders need to be able to spot the right codes in as many as 10,000 codes. That’s definitely far from easy.

Billing

The agent in the medical billing system continues where the coder stops. The prompt and appropriate compensation of doctors lie in the hands of the billing agent.

The medical billing agent may have an even more demanding responsibility. Naturally he has to know all about the major insurance plans throughout the country. Aside from that, he also needs to have some knowledge of the coder’s job. If a coder makes a mistake with assigning codes, the billing agent should be able to spot the mistake and correct it. His work completes the medical billing system.

It is obvious that handling the medical billing system is never really as easy as it seems. It is also obvious however that it is a very necessary system. Although it may take time for a person to learn to be an expert in the medical billing system, the services that he can offer medical practitioners provides a lot of convenience.
